Phenols are broad spectrum disinfectants that function by denaturing proteins and inactivating membrane-bound enzymes to alter the cell wall permeability of microorganisms. Phenols are not effective against non-enveloped viruses and spores. Phenols do maintain activity in hard water and in the presence of organic matter and have some residual activity after drying.

Chloramine-T, as an anti-microbial agent, has had widespread use in a broad range of practices, including medical, dental, veterinary, food processing, and agricultural. As a disinfectant, it is used to disinfect surfaces and instruments. Chloramine-T has a low degree of cytotoxicity and has been used in direct contact with tissues. In agricultural practices, chloramine-T has been approved as a broad-spectrum biocide for foot-and-mouth disease, swine vesicular disease, diseases of poultry, and tuberculosis in the United Kingdom, and is used in numerous branches of industry such as intensive farming and slaughterhouses.

Glutaraldehyde is effective against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria, fungi, and a variety of viruses. The wide spectrum of biocidal activity supports the many diverse applications. Glutaraldehyde retains wide spectrum efficacy even at low temperatures, although contact times may need to be extended slightly. Glutaraldehyde is readily biodegradable.
Glutaraldehyde has the property to bind itself to the proteins through their R-NH2 (amine) groups. It has a very strong virucidal activity obtained by the cross-linking of the proteins of the naked (or hydrophilic) viruses’ capsid. It also combines with the nucleic acids contained in viruses (DNA/RNA). Bactericidal and fungicidal activities are due to the combination of glutaraldehyde with the proteic parts of the metabolic enzymes, and with the amino-acids. Glutamon is associated with a synergistic blend of highly tensio-active QAC’s.

The peroxy compounds are microbiocides.
