It is a worldwide problem that ranges clinically from inapparent to a rapidly fatal condition characterized by gastrointestinal, respiratory and/or nervous signs. The many ND virus strains vary widely in virulence and tissue tropisms. The presence of virulent strains in poultry requires monitoring and control measures because the existence of the virus severely impacts commercial productivity and the international trade in poultry and poultry products. Both attenuated live and inactivated vaccines are used to control the disease.

Avian Influenza – H9N2

H9N2 influenza virus has become endemic in different types of terrestrial poultry in multiple countries on the Eurasian continent,resulting in great economic losses due to reduced egg production or high mortality associated with co-infection with other pathogens.
Clinical signs: The H9N2 influenza virus can be transmitted by air droplet, dust, feed, or water. On its own, the H9N2 influenza did not induce obvious clinical signs or deaths in chickens. Chickens usually seemed to be healthy; few showed depression, ruffled feathers and respiratory distress. H9N2 influenza virus makes chickens more susceptible to secondary infections, especially Escherichia coli infections. Outbreaks of H9N2 can be controlled by vaccination.

Infectious Coryza

Infectious coryza is an acute respiratory disease of chickens characterized by nasal discharge, facial swelling and anorexia. The causative agent of infectious coryza is Avibacterium paragallinarum. The disease occurs worldwide and causes economic losses due to an increased number of culls and a marked (10% to more than 40%) drop in egg production, particularly on multi-age farms. Prevention with vaccines is the only method of control.

Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale is a Gram-negative, non-motile, highly pleomorphic, rod-shaped, non-sporulating bacterium, which has become an emerging pathogen that causes high economic losses in the poultry industry worldwide. Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale infection, which is reported mostly in broiler chickens and turkeys, causes respiratory distress, decreased growth, and mortality. The best strategy for their control or prevention is probably vaccination, because most worldwide O. rhinotracheale isolates have acquired resistance against the antibiotics regularly used in the poultry industry.

Egg drop syndrome – 1976 (EDS –’76) is a viral disease of chickens and quail, is characterized by a decrease in egg production accompanied by a reduction in egg quality. The syndrome is caused by an adenovirus with transmission occurring vertically and horizontally.
Incubation period: 10-24 days.
The major symptoms are a variable decrease in egg production and the production of abnormal eggs.
